Celebrating 70 Years at St Mary's
70th Anniversary Celebrations
On Friday 15th November we welcomed Archbishop Nolan and Priests and Parishioners who Celebrated the 70th Anniversary of The Opening of the present St Mary's Church. It was officially opened on the 14th November 1954 by Archbishop Campbell ( See History page).
We welcomed our Member of Parliament Mr. Douglas McAllister, MSP, Marie McNair, Deputy Provost Hazel Sorell and other guests.
Priest who concelebrated the Mass included Sons of the Parish. Fr Bernard Fox (Mill Hill Missionary) Fr Gerry Byrne (St Bridgit's) Fr Scott Deeley (St Patrick's Kilsyth).
Our local schools Headteachers and Leadership Teams attended as well as many pupils from St Peter the Apostle High School and St Mary's primary along with many families and children. A SHOUT OUT TO OUR S6 STUDENT FOR ALL THEIR HELP ON THE NIGHT AS A PART OF CARITAS INITIATIVE.
The Archbishop spoke about the many Parishioners down through the ages who had built and maintained the church but more than that had carried the good news of Joy to others through Faith. He mentioned the unsung heroes who work quietly behind the scenes of Parish life, that active participation which is the hallmark of Christian Life and so necessary in keeping parishes alive and open.
As a gesture of thanks the Archdiocesan Medal was presented by the Archbishop to 3 parishioners, who really represent all of us who belong to St Mary's: Mr & Mrs James & Phyliss Smith and Mr James Brown who have shown great commitment to their parish over many decades like so many others.
After the beautiful Mass enhanced by our Choir, nearly 200 folks were catered for in the Parish Hall, which is a real part of the community and parish life. There was a great atmosphere of togetherness on the night. It was a fitting celebration as we journey on towards the Great Jubilee in 2025 with lots more exciting times.
